Anchoring and Nurturing a State’s Relationship with Art

Designed with Machado and Silvetti Associates of Cambridge, Massachusetts the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) sits on the University of Utah Campus and houses more that 20 galleries with a permanent collection of over 20,000 works. The diverse range of spaces allows the UMFA to engage with disparate works of art and exhibitions of radically different scales, formats, and origins. With a large exhibition hall which has accommodated performances and installation pieces as well as traditional painting galleries, the building design fosters the museum’s goal of presenting diverse and engaging subject matter. Its exterior echoes this attitude towards a variety of voices, with subtle changes in brick patterning and volumes that appear at once as distinct shapes and as pieces of a cohesive whole.
