Utah, known as the Crossroads of the West, has always been a railroad town. The original development of Salt Lake and Ogden grew in a strictly regulated grid beginning at its great railroad terminals, expanding outward in a succession of hotels and commerce. The design submitted to this competition recaptures several existing produce-loading sheds as part of two armatures that embrace Second South, the street which acts as the main link connecting the eastern and western parts of the city. In a simple series of gestures using primarily the utilitarian alignment of tracks, bus bays, and an exceptionally large canopy for the small terminal building, the design provides an open embrace to the city.
