Perched in the steep ravines overlooking Salt Lake Valley, the Canyon Residence embraces nature’s interplay of light, erosion, and time. Cantilevered living spaces anchor to the hillside, with deep west facing recesses offering protection from the intense desert sun while framing expansive views. Exposed to nature, building materials decay at different rates, providing intriguing opportunities for design to engage gracefully with the entropy present in the natural world. The building rests, suspended above earth-bound stone walls that incorporate CorTen steel plates in the coursing, providing a different rate of erosion from the stone itself. This juxtaposition of materials invites a layered expression of age and resilience, a quiet testament to the beauty of enduring change.
